David Apellániz

One of the leading cellists of his generation, David Apellániz has built a career marked by expressive intensity, stylistic rigour and a deep musical curiosity ranging from the great Romantic repertoire to contemporary creation. His approach to the instrument combines a solid Central European tradition with an open, flexible sensitivity, the fruit of years of performance and artistic reflection.

As a soloist he maintains a constant presence in the leading national and international halls and festivals. His repertoire includes the great cello concertos of Schumann and Dvořák, those of Saint-Saëns and Haydn, Boccherini's concertos Nos. 3 and 6, the Lalo Concerto, Beethoven's Triple Concerto, the Brahms Double Concerto, the Shostakovich Concerto and Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations. He has performed them with ensembles such as the Royal Seville Symphony, the Gulbenkian Orchestra of Lisbon, the Barcelona Symphony, the Valencia Orchestra, the City of Granada Orchestra, the Ensemble National de Lyon and the Bohuslav Martinů Orchestra of the Czech Republic, under conductors such as Paul McCreesh, Carlos Álvarez and Maximiano Valdés, in venues such as the Berlin Konzerthaus, the National Auditorium of Madrid, the Maestranza Theatre in Seville and the Palau de la Música Catalana.

His discography —with more than fifteen recordings for labels such as Naxos, Sony, Col legno, Neos, Verso and RNE— has been recognised by critics at Gramophone, BBC Music Magazine, Scherzo, Ritmo, Melómano and Fanfare, who have particularly highlighted his work with the Arriaga Trio as a revelation of the European chamber-music scene. With his brother, pianist Carlos Apellániz, he forms the Apellániz Duo.
